How To Tell Your Baby’s Father And Family You Are Pregnant

You just had a positive pregnancy test. If you’ve confirmed the pregnancy, how do you tell the father of the baby (FOB) or your family the news?

How Do You Tell The FOB That You Are Pregnant?

The way you tell the father of your baby that you are pregnant depends on several factors:

1.Is your relationship loving and stable?

Women find themselves pregnant at different stages in their relationships.

Sometimes, it happens when you just start dating, and sometimes when you are married.

Obviously, this will be easy if your FOB expected the news and is happy. If you barely know him, it may create more complications.

Be sensitive about when to share the news, and remember that you should never tolerate abuse or mistreatment in a relationship.

2. Do you know how he feels about abortion?

Early in a relationship, that question may not have even come up. In fact, this pregnancy may come as a total surprise.

If you both feel the same about pregnancy and abortion, this will be an easier conversation. If you disagree, it may need to be handled differently.

3.Has he ever been abusive?

If so, this is not a conversation you should have alone. You can also choose not to share the news with the FOB–your safety matters. If you are in an abusive relationship, you should seek professional help.

Contact us at Women’s Pregnancy Center. We can give you some community referrals for counseling or alternative housing during your appointment.

4.Will he come with you to a pregnancy test appointment?

Women’s Pregnancy Center has men who will meet with the FOB and give him the same information you are receiving. He can also see the ultrasound and have his questions answered.

How Do You Tell Your Family About Your Pregnancy?

Ask yourself the same questions you would with the FOB:

  • Do you have a good relationship?

  • How do they feel about abortion?

  • Are you in danger of abuse?

Even if you think the father of the baby or your family won’t support you, don’t sell them short. We’ve seen many cases where women have been pleasantly surprised by the reaction they receive.

Would one of your family members come to an appointment with you? At Women’s Pregnancy Center, we find it often helps them to find out the same information as you.

We will welcome you, the FOB, and your family members. We can provide you with a no-cost pregnancy test and ultrasound, as well as the information and referrals you need.
