Dealing with an unexpected pregnancy is enough to handle on its own, but it can feel especially challenging if you’re still continuing your education. The good news is, you can do it! Many women have dealt with the same issues of experiencing pregnancy while going to college.
You Are Protected
It can be hard to go to classes regularly or stressful to keep up with assignments when you’re not feeling well, are excessively tired, and have other pregnancy symptoms. However, Title IX offers support.
Title IX is a federal law that prevents discrimination based on sex, including pregnancy and parenting status, in educational settings. It guarantees accommodations for pregnant students, such as:
Allowing you to continue participating in classes and extracurricular activities. This means you can still participate in advanced placement and honors classes, school clubs, sports, and other activities, like after-school programs operated at the school.
Excused absences for pregnancy and childbirth (like doctor’s visits and pregnancy-related illness).
Maintaining your academic status after an excused absence and the chance to catch up on missed work.
This isn't a complete list, which is why you should talk to your college advisor to get the support you deserve.
Use Your Support Systems
Whether it will be from your partner, friends, family, or other loved ones, seeking support from your circle is one of the best things you can do. They can offer practical advice, help with errands or your to-do list, or just be an emotional soundboard for you.
Don’t be afraid to ask for help. Even if you don’t have a great support network available to you now, you always have one at Women’s Pregnancy Center.
