What Is Ectopic Pregnancy?

A normal pregnancy begins with a fertilized egg attaching to the lining of the uterus. Ectopic pregnancy is when a pregnancy occurs with a fertilized egg implanting or growing outside of the uterus.

Symptoms of Ectopic Pregnancy

Ectopic pregnancy is something to look out for, as treatment is vital to a woman’s health and safety. According to the Mayo Clinic, symptoms of ectopic pregnancy include:

  • Pelvic pain

  • Light vaginal bleeding

  • Shoulder pain or an urge to have a bowel movement

Symptoms are unique to where the blood collects and what nerves are irritated. Even more severe symptoms that could indicate internal heavy bleeding due to a rupture include:

  • Extreme lightheadedness

  • Fainting

  • Shock

Seek immediate medical attention if you experience any of these symptoms. You can never be too safe.

Why Ultrasounds Matter

A positive pregnancy test result cannot tell you all there is to know about your pregnancy. An ultrasound is a harmless scan to reveal the location of your pregnancy—which is vital for diagnosing or ruling out an ectopic pregnancy. An ultrasound will also determine how far along you are and alert you to any other potential complications.
