Am I Eligible for the Abortion Pill?

Eligibility for the abortion pill depends on many factors, like how long you have been pregnant, your health history, and the location of your pregnancy. If you are considering abortion, your first step is to obtain an ultrasound to learn more about the pregnancy so you and your provider can determine if the abortion pill is an option.

Free, confidential ultrasounds are available at the Women’s Pregnancy Center. Contact us to schedule your appointment.

What Is the Abortion Pill?

The abortion pill is a series of drugs taken to terminate a pregnancy. First, the abortion provider gives mifepristone at their office to block the body’s progesterone supporting the pregnancy. Within 48 hours, you take misoprostol, usually at home. This drug signals the uterus to begin contractions which expel the embryo or fetus from your body through bleeding and cramping.

The abortion pill is a serious medical procedure. Understand the procedure and the risks to prioritize your safety.

Abortion Pill Eligibility

The abortion pill is only FDA-approved for pregnancies under 10 weeks

Other reasons you may not be eligible for the abortion pill include if you:

  • Have a pregnancy outside of the uterus (ectopic pregnancy)

  • Have a blood clotting disorder or significant anemia

  • Have chronic adrenal failure

  • Use long-term corticosteroids

  • Have an intrauterine device (IUD)

  • Have an allergy to the medications used

  • Do not have access to emergency care

  • Can’t return for a follow-up visit

Where Do You Start?

Before you take the abortion pill, you will need to obtain an ultrasound and speak with a medical professional. Share your health history so you and your healthcare provider can decide on the safest option for your situation.
